Elder Care – Who Cares for the Care Giver?

If you are the primary care giver of an elder you know the drill. Get up, take Grandma to the toilet, help her dress, fix and feed breakfast, take her to appointments, and the list goes on and on ad nauseum. Where do you find time to care for you?

According to Carol O’Dell, author of Mothering Mother, you have to make time to tend to yourself or you will get lost or collapse under the burden. Some things to consider when caring for yourself and your elder charge:

  • Join a caregiver support group
  • Set realistic goals for care
  • Communicate with family and friends
  • Find community resources and implement them
  • Find respite service and USE them
  • Make time to exercise and maintain your health
  • Laugh

Caring for an elderly or infirm love one with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or Parkinson’s disease is hard work. If you don’t take care of you who will be there to take care of them? Find the resources you need to help you as a family caregiver. Professional support and guidance is available. Don’t try and do this alone.
